The Group, formally known as the Bavarian Enlightenment Society , was a small society established in the late 1770s with Adam Weishaupt, a professor at the University of Bavaria . Initially , its aim was to challenge the influence of clericalism and dogma through the advocacy of enlightenment and freedom . Although its reign was relatively limited
